Ramna Thana

Ramna Thana (dhaka district) with an area of 7.85 sq km, is bounded by Tejgaon and khilgaon thanas on the north, lalbagh and kotwali (Dhaka) thanas on the south, motijheel and Khilgaon thanas on the east and dhanmondi thana on the west. Ramna Lake is located on the west side of the thana.
Ramna Thana Area Raman thana is a very important area of Dhaka City Corporation. Many government, semi government, autonomous and private institutions are located here. Mentions may be made of Bangladesh Secretariat, Food Department, Railway Bhaban, Police Headquarters, City Corporation Bhaban, Postal Department, Relief Department, Taxation Department, C&AG Office, Shilpakala Academy, Telephone Bhaban, High Court Division, National Museum, Directorate of Public Library, Dhaka University, Hotel Sheraton, Roads and Highways Division, Fisheries Division, Directorate of Education, Dhaka Medical College Hospital, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (PG Hospital), BIRDEM Hospital, Bangla Academy, Asiatic Society of Bangladesh, etc.

Administration Ranma thana was established in 1921. It consists of four wards and 27 mouzas.
Archaeological heritage and relics Curzon Hall (Dhaka University), Haji Shahabaj Mosque, Burdwan House, South House of Jagannath Hall, Siddheswari Mandir, Ramna Kali Mandir, Ramna Gate, Nimtali Deuri (Asiatic Society of Bangladesh).
Historical event During the language movement in 1952 some student activists were killed by police firing at a place adjacent to the Dhaka Medical College. On 7 March 1971 Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibar Rahman delivered his historic speech at the Surwardy Uddan (Ramna Race Course). The Pak army signed the document of surrender at the Surwardy Uddan on 16 December 1971.

Population 195167; male 58.32%, female 41.68%; Muslim 93.71%, Hindu 4.63%, Christian 1.37% and others 0.29%.

Main fruits Mango, coconut, jackfruit.
Communication facilities Roads: pucca 130 km, semi pucca 40 km. Kazi Nazrul Islam Avenue, Shabagh, Eskaton, Topkhana and Bangabandhu Avenue are important roads.
Traditional transport Palanquin, bullock cart and horse carriage. These means of transport are either extinct or nearly extinct.
Manufactories Press, garments industry, biscuit and bread factory, shoe factory, pharmaceutical industry, etc.
Main shopping centre, bazars and fairs Shopping centre: Baitul Mukarram Super Market, Pritam Bhaban, Mauchak Market, Pir Yameni Market, Aziz Super Market; noted fairs: Ramna Baishakhi Mela, Ekushey Boi (book) Mela.
Main exports Ready made garments, electronics and electric goods, shoe, shirt and pant pieces.
NGO activities Operationally important NGOs are Jatiya Mohila Sangstha, Manabadhikar Bastabayan Sangstha, Anjuman Khademul Islam.
