Dhanmondi Thana

Dhanmondi Thana (dhaka district) with an area of 7.74 sq km, is bounded by tejgaon and mohammadpur thanas on the north, lalbagh thana on the south, ramna thana on the east, hazaribagh and Mohammadpur thanas on the west.

Administration Dhanmondi thana was established in 1976. It consists of three wards, 20 mouzas.
Historical events bangabandhu sheikh mujibur rahman was arrested by the Pak army on the night of 25 March 1971 from his Dhanmondi residence. He, along with his family members, was assassinated in a military coup on 15 August 1975.
Population 162088; male 54.87%, female 45.13%; Muslim 98.02%, Hindu 1.3% and others 0.68%.
Religious institutions Mosque 63, temple 1, Idgaha 2 and tomb 1.
Literacy and educational institutions Average literacy 71.7%; male 78% and female 63.4%. Educational institutions: private university 5, college 5, medical college 2, school 36, madrasa 15. Noted educational institutions: Dhaka College, City College, Government Laboratory School.

Main occupations Industry 2.32%, commerce 27.6%, service 41.68%, construction 2.71%, transport 6.33%, house renting out 4.61% and others 14.75%.
Land use Urbanisation 100%; residential 70%, commercial 8%, office 2%, public use 10%, low lying land 10%.
Value of land The market value of the land of the first grade is 15 lakh Taka per katha.
Extinct or nearly extinct crops Paddy, jute, sugarcane, pulses.
Main fruits Mango, jackfruit, papaya, litchi, guava and banana.
Communication facilities Roads: pucca 42 km, mud road 10 km.
Traditional transport Palanquin, bullock cart and horse carriage. These means of transport are either extinct or nearly extinct.
Manufactories Garments industry.
Cottage industries Goldsmith, tailoring, handicrafts and leather goods.
Main bazars, shopping centres and fairs Total number of bazars and shopping centres is 49, most noted of which are New Market, Gausia, Dhanmondi Hawkers Market and Chadni Chawk; fairs: Baishaki Mela and Book Fair at Kalabagan Park.
Main exports Ready made garments, handicrafts, leather goods.
